St Margaret's CEVA Primary School

Transforming lives by living and learning together in God's love

Physical Education

Our aim:

At St Margaret’s we aim to provide a PE curriculum which inspires a love of sport, movement and a healthy lifestyle. We have partnered with ITFC foundation to help deliver this aim. ITFC Foundation provide sporting opportunities for all year groups at break times, lunch times, during lessons and after school. We aspire for our children to leave primary school with the necessary skills and knowledge for their later life. Our PE curriculum ensures we cover all essential sports ranging from striking and fielding, invasion games, net games, athletics, dance, gymnastics and officiating. Our curriculum also allows for progression of various skills as well as developing leadership, team work and confidence. We are proud members of the Suffolk School Games, receiving a gold award in 2023-2024 academic year. This membership allows us to participate in an array of inter-school competitions, keep an eye out for these on our school website!

Meet the PE team:

Hello, I am Miss Ross, leader of PE with Mr Newson.

I have a life long love of sport, I played all sports, mainly football throughout all of my childhood and into adulthood. I coached both boys and girls at grassroots and elite level for multiple years. I am currently a coach for an U12 football team. I am a season ticket holder at Ipswich Town and very much enjoy following the town up and down the country! I will be leading the PE team alongside Mr Newson.

I hope here at St Margaret's that children will develop a love for sport through a nurturing environment where they try new things, develop fundamental skills, develop confidence and build teamwork and resilience. We offer a range of sports in our PE lessons, before school, lunch clubs and after school clubs. I hope these opportunities can help the children to develop a love and passion for sports.

I look forward to continuing to develop the PE here alongside Mr Newson and the ITFC Foundation!

Hello, I am Mr Newson, a member of the PE department with and Miss Ross. I have always loved sports, I enjoy participating and watching live events. My favourite sports are football, American football, ice hockey, basketball and I have more recently taken an interest in baseball, after watching a live event. I follow teams in all those sports but none more than my beloved Ipswich Town, where I have been watching games regularly since I was at primary school and have had a season ticket since I was 12. When I am not watching the Town, I play football on Saturdays.

At St Margaret’s we hope to see the children develop many skills whilst trying sports new to them. It is great to see the children grow in confidence during PE sessions and we all know the sense of wellbeing physical activity gives us, especially when we are having fun learning new skills. The children show a different side of themselves in PE and we love to see them working together using communication, combined effort and perseverance.

We hope to open up opportunities to the children as they embrace new challenges and create a love for sports and physical education.

Play Leaders:

Pupils in Year 6 have the opportunity of applying for the position of Play Leader. Their responsibilities include organising play equipment for the younger children, and leading play at lunch time.

Pupils who are interested in the role attend a meeting at the start of the academic year where they find out about the expectations and responsibilities involved. When they are sure they want to commit they are asked to fill out an application form which asks them to reflect and think about their personal strengths as an individual and what they feel they can offer to the role. Play Leaders work closely with the PE team to organise a timetable so they know when they are on duty, we have play leaders every day of the week providing activities to the younger children. We also meet regularly with play leaders to discuss the how it is going for them.

During the summer term, Play Leaders will also be involved in the handover of responsibilities to the current Year 5 children who will be next year’s Play Leaders.

We love to celebrate our children's success in sports outside of school and had an assembly to celebrate their achievements.

We then celebrated our sports success in school and awarded two children for showing the values of perseverance, teamwork and resilience in sports session in school.
