We have consulted a range of stakeholders in relation to our Relationship and Sex Education policy. Teaching sex education is not compulsory in primary schools and our school community has decided we will teach the relationship part of the curriculum only*. This will be taught through the 'Jigsaw' resources, which have been created to ensure a mindful approach to Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and are aimed to increase pupil confidence. Jigsaw is a unique and progressive scheme of work, aiming to prepare children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

This program is taught by class teachers. Each unit of work is called a 'puzzle' and puzzles last for a half term. Your child's teacher will be able to answer any questions about the unit of work being taught, and you will be made aware of what the focus is on the termly 'curriculum map' that you are sent at the beginning of each term. You will have an opportunity when your child is in Year 4, 5 and 6 to discuss the materials and curriculum used at school, so you are well-equipped for discussions at home.

*Please ignore the units 'conception' and 'conception to birth' as we will not be teaching those.

St Margaret's teaches the National Curriculum objectives through the Jigsaw scheme of work. If you have questions or queries regarding this very important part of the curriculum, then please speak with your child's teacher in the first instance, or the phase leader. When your child gets to high school, sex education will be compulsory.
